My Color and Style Analysis with House of Colour: A Life-Changing Experience You Need to Try
My Life-Changing Color and Style Analysis Experience
I’ve always been tuned in with makeover shows. Style, home renos…there’s something about that “before and after” concept that flips a switch on changing more than meets the eye.
Remember TLC’s “What Not to Wear” with Stacy London and Clinton Kelly? Their transformations were about so much more than clothes. They showed how confidence blooms when you feel like yourself in what you wear. Note: They have a new series out called “Wear Whatever the F You Want” on Amazon Prime. Yes, I binge watched.
So this year, with Stacy London’s photo on my vision board and images of color-happy closets all around it, I decided to finally go for it. The universe answered, and I booked my own color and style analysis session with Holly at House of Colour!
And let me tell you…it was a game changer for me!

What Is a Color Analysis?
Color analysis is a process that determines which colors harmonize best with your unique skin tone, eye color, and hair. It takes out all the guesswork and reveals which hues naturally make you look radiant, rested, and alive.
Here’s what the session was like:
I arrived with no makeup and my hair pulled back.
Holly draped different colored swatches under my face to see which best enhanced my skin
I could see it instantly. Pure white, my old staple, made me look washed out! Off-white and cream lit up my skin with warmth.
Magenta brought out my under-eye circles (no thanks).
Black, another go-to for me, took all the life out of my complexion.
Holly was so full of knowledge and really provided so much great information.
My Results
I learned I look best in warm hues from the Autumn palette. I was thrilled because pastel colors have never felt like me, and I feared I’d be stuck in those palettes. (Also, every season still provides gorgeous colors, which I didn’t fully understand until my analysis!) Autumn offers lighter tones too – but those lighter colors actually work with my coloring. Huge difference!
Some of my top takeaways were:
Every season has “basic” colors to build your wardrobe around
My palette swatch book is now my shopping sidekick
Goodbye pure white, black and magenta pinks and colors that no longer serve me
Hello better-than-black options
Gold jewelry suits me better than silver (I’ve been wearing silver for years…who knew!)
House of Colour has an entire makeup line that perfectly matches your season - which is like a Godsend in and of itself!

Makeup That Actually Matches My Colors
Holly applied the House of Colour makeup line on me right after my color analysis. She used primer, color correction concealer, foundation, bronzer, shadow, liner, mascara, misting spray, lip color – the works. It was a matter of maybe 5 minutes. Totally manageable to do on my own…and every pigment color used worked for me because it was in my season! To make it even better…the makeup stayed put all day long, even in the Minnesota summer heat! That is a SCORE in my book for sure!
I have a boatload of makeup at home already, (what a thing to collect!) so I didn’t buy any House of Color makeup products yet. I stress YET because I would like to! I loved the simplicity of it all. I really liked how the primer felt, and how the color corrector fixed that purple/red dark skin tone I have going on. Even the teal eyeliner was an elevated look from the normal brown I’d been wearing. We tried a copper colored lip gloss that I’d never worn before and I actually looked really nice in that shade. I felt really good afterwards…and if simple products can replicate that feeling day after day…I am on board.
What is important to understand is this: Because all of the makeup is intended for my season of color, that made it simple to put together in minimal time. No guessing involved. Everything worked. The only thing I changed in the above images was my lip color. No more countless hours at the makeup displays trying to guess what might be a good color. House of Colour has exactly what you need.
This is just lipstick and lip stuff I have in a drawer on my vanity. And…shocker…I’d say more than half of these colors are not the best colors for me!
I would pretty much eliminate most of these and just go with 3 different shades of the House of Colour lip products alone!
(Truth: I did get rid of about half of the shades you see here!)
Why I Also Added The Style Analysis
With menopause weight changes over the past year and a half, my closet wasn’t just the wrong color – it no longer fit my body or my vibe. Wait-I actually have a style vibe? Yes. Yes I do. We all do! My guess is many of us haven’t figured out what said vibe is just yet. Holly can help!
If I’m being honest with myself, I really didn’t know how to dress the body I had before the ‘pause gain either. So this was well overdue but the perfect timing.
I’ve always loved layers, texture, comfort, a little bling, but not always doing what everyone else might be. I knew dresses, stuffy suits, and frilly pieces weren’t me.
Through the style analysis with Holly, I discovered my style personality is Dramatic Natural. Think rocker-chic with intention! It’s relaxed, textured, asymmetrical, and eclectic with a confident edge. YES! This sounds more like the me I want to show up to be every day! What I also came to understand, is for the photography sessions I do, I have a “uniform” I wear (usually white tshirt for reflection, and a black bottoms). But I can still dress up my uniform to feel harmonious with my style, with accessories, even if it’s a subtle bling on my progressive bifocal lens. ;-) Oh, age. I’m learning to embrace!
Now, I’m on a mission to build a closet with versatile pieces I love. Sift through each existing piece means I keep or bless and release. I want to find pieces that check all the boxes, in the right color palette, that I’ll actually wear, and that feel like me every single day. And let go of the ones that don’t! And I’m also needing to give myself grace in this process!
By the way? I had a slight change of heard and think I might actually try a skirt. Seriously!! Me + Skirt. Holy cats! And even better, I’m actually excited about it! I’ll be a showstopper in my own unique way. Get ready! ;-)
