Siblings Give A Photo Gift to Mom

I have a friend of 39 years who needed something special to lift her spirits for her birthday.

In COVID times, we have all made the sacrifice to stay home, stay away from gatherings, hangouts, and just being together with anyone outside of our immediate family. There is something to be said about getting together in the presence of good company in person. We all yearn for that. Without that contact, we start to fall to moments of sadness, overthinking, depression and who knows what else our mind will do. My friend Erin’s birthday was coming up and I knew she was really going through some things in her life, then add COVID restrictions on top of all of that.

At the time, Erin’s birthday was about a month out, so I reached out to her daughter, Hannah, and asked if she would help me in doing something nice for her mom. Both Hannah and younger brother, Adam, were on board!

Neither Hannah or Adam had their senior portraits taken senior year, and so I thought it would be fun if we did a mini photo shoot! Each one could have some senior portraits to call their own, plus some sibling “together” shots, and present those to Erin for her birthday. Adam brought his cap and gown, as he graduated from Henry Sibley, Class of 2020 just a week prior with a virtual ceremony.

Due to schedule conflicts, we were up against the clock to get a session scheduled in time to present to Erin for her actual birthday - but we pulled it off without a hitch! Hannah and Adam made a fun little birthday sign for Erin, and we would use that to wrap up a wonderful little video for the two kids to present to Erin on her actual birthday.

I was really proud of Adam and Hannah for being able to come together for this surprise session for their mom. (Hannah is living about 2 hours out of town right now, so coming into town was a big deal!)

The weather was great for our session in my yard at my home in Woodbury, MN. When it came time for Adam to do his cap and gown with the tassel…I made him toss his cap for live video….and the tassel got stuck up in one of my trees. Like WAY up there. They used a soccer ball to get the tassel down.

If you watch the video, you will get to see what Adam said about the tassel getting stuck way up in the tree!

I had hoped that by helping Hannah and Adam give a gift to their mom like this, that she would be overwhelmed with joy and happiness, and remind her just how special she is to so many. I joked with Hannah that the goal was to make mom cry when she sees what the kids pulled together for her.

She was overjoyed. And happy. And full of happy tears.

Mission accomplished.

Erin was one of my first friends that I met going into kindergarten at Lincoln Elementary School in South St. Paul in the early 80s. Not too many people can say that they still are close with their childhood friends since kindergarten. I am so happy to be able to help her children present a gift that will last a lifetime. Erin also received a set of three image blocks in black and white images of the kids to wrap up her birthday celebration.
